Yembol – “Don’t chew, just swallow”
Yembol – pepper soup

The fact that Yelp has a category for “African” food but not for most individual countries or regions is telling. Ethiopian food has established a toehold in Dallas with some excellent choices. Nigerian food, not so much.

DT chose Yembol for Nigerian food. To cut him some slack before immediately jumping into the review, Nigerian food is an ethnic cuisine, and our quest is to eat at every type of ethnic cuisine available in DFW. So, it perhaps this the best Nigerian food in DFW. That said, it isn’t good.

Half nightclub, half restaurant, we were the only people eating. A charming waitress seemed a bit surprised to see us, and she was reluctant to make any suggestions, but I started off with Pepper Soup (and to her credit, she did warn me of the spice). I have no idea what all was in it, but I suspect it was miscellaneous beef parts that can be delicacies, but in this case were heavily spiced chewy bites of “innards surprise”.

The main courses each came with Amala, a molded yam paste molded that came surrounded by Saran wrap (soon known to our table as the Yam condom). It had little taste, but did serve to cut the spice from some of the other dishes.   When I asked our waitress how to eat the diverse mixture of food on my plate – chicken, amala and a sauce – her advice was “don’t chew, just swallow”.   Excellent advice, and as to the restaurant as a whole I’ll give a similar thought – “don’t go, just skip”.
