Mexican Street Tacos – El Trompo and Mariachi

I don’t know that street tacos are a separate ethnic cuisine, and I don’t really care. They are unbelievably good, and Dallas has great ones all of a sudden, ranging from upscale to decidedly not. Our favorite, single best street taco in Dallas is the al pastor at Trompo. Just don’t expect a chair to sit on or much on the menu (5 items total perhaps? 3 tacos and quesadilla). This is a northern Mexico street taco with paprika coated pork roasted on the trompo (rotisserie). No citrus here.

Best street tacos with some upscale ingredients include Taco  Mariachi (conveniently located near Trompo in case you want a Street Taco face off) which has a Pulpo taco that is outstanding.  Just don’t read The Soul of an Octopus first.  Very good option and it even comes with tables.   And, it qualifies as a dive, although perhaps not as much as Trompo.
